The path follows deer-
tracks along the banks of a stream that flows snail-like when the current empties into a wide, deep channel, or with scintillant wings when it chokes into a steep, narrow line, a dead-end almost.
Other trails wind up the heights where the vestiges of ancient agriculture clash against a stand of primeval hardwoods, the mutilated spines of which branch like the poached antlers of old bucks.
Between dream and waking, a kite soars above the fringes, skirting the trail of memories spurting spirally,
each — thought or hawk, spectre or skirl, gable dormer or stag beetle — a snail jutting through its shell’s peristome, brandishing its tentacles like a hart attired and trailing its mucous trace, or sometimes a clean blank when it shelters behind the shield of its epiphragm, there where the way trails off into dangerous margins, into the tortuous gaps of the categorical arteries binding the elk of space to the elytra of time, because the wake of one is the blain of the other
and the shore others fly to is always an elusive snail, a spotted
doe fleeing down a dark path.
